I often feel that I have a problem with discipline. I can think of so many examples of times in my life when I decided to follow a course of action and to see it through. But, I can think of other examples when I stayed the course and did what I had set out to do. I don’t know what factors are different in these situations. If you have these thoughts or any ideas for me, I would love to hear them.
Here is what I am talking about. I decide to keep a journal so I write for a couple of days and then I quit. I start flossing and brushing my teeth at night, like my dentist encourages me to do , and then I stop. I start to follow Weight Watchers, and am successful, and then I stop. I start to keep a To Do list and then I stop.
On the other hand, I followed Weight Watchers many years ago and I achieved my weight loss goal. I followed the Take Shape For Life plan religiously, achieved my goal, and even became a Health Coach. I decided to run a marathon so I followed my training schedule and was successful. I decided to write a blog article every day and I have done so for a couple of weeks now (wondering how long it will last and what happens when I miss a day).
I know that I am nor perfect and I will succeed sometimes and fall short sometimes. But as I think about these situations, I wish I could identify the key factors that make the difference. Perhaps it has to do with whether I make the decision or whether someone else (e.g my doctor or dentist) makes the decision for me. By not listening to my doctor or dentist, I am exerting some kind of control over them even though it is not in the best interest of my health? Nobody’s going to tell me to do something good for me. I’ll show them. It’s not logical but it may make sense.
What do you think? I’d love to hear from you.
