Do you remember studying The Law of Inertia in your science classes? Simply put, The Law of Inertia, or Newton’s First Law of Motion states:
An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Put even more simply, an object tends to keep doing what it’s doing. And so do I.
Yesterday was Day One again. Yesterday I decided to write this blog again. Yesterday I decided to journal about my core values. Yesterday I decided to floss my teeth again (dentist appointment is coming up in a few weeks).
There have been so many Day Ones in my life. How many times have I eaten pizza or wings for the last time before starting a diet? Or started flossing my teeth before the next dentist appointment? Or started writing my book? Or my music? Or “fill in the good habit here?”
Some people say that it takes 21 days to form a habit. It takes inertia and inertia is great when you are developing a healthy habit. My problem is that my inertia helps me continue to do things that are not so healthy. Sure, I can decide that today is another Day One, another chance to start with a clean slate. It takes effort to fight against the negative inertia. It takes changing old behaviors. It takes discipline to stick to the new behaviors.
So, this latest Day One was pretty successful. Day Two is going well so far. On Day 21, I hope you will have a blog article to read.
